Joy Luck Place

Part of the Christmas season experience in Tallahassee is seeing the lights at Dorothy Oven Park.  Following an evening of exploring the brightly-lit grounds, filled with festive pink flamingos, a train, and a glowing menorah, we were all hungry.   We packed up the kids and decided to eat at Tallahassee’s newest Chinese restaurant, Joy Luck Place.

Joy Luck Place is located at 1002 N. Monroe Street, and by the time we arrived, the main dining area was packed.  We were seated, and while Kirsten looked over the menu, I spied on what other patrons were eating.  Steaming bowls of noodles, roasted duck, and plates of rice caught my eye.  We settled on an order of shumai for the table.  I ordered the roast duck noodle soup and pan fried beef noodle. Kirsten opted for the American-Chinese favorite of General Tso’s chicken while Julia and Mason agreed to split an order of chicken fried rice.

The shumai, a traditional Chinese dumpling, arrived first in its metal steaming pan.  The dumpling was packed with pork, and topped with sliced scallions for a pop of color.  The flavor was delicious and the dumpling, instead of being a doughy mess, was thin. They reminded Kirsten of a flavorful Chinese meatball, and they were a delicious way to start our meal, and quickly disappeared from the table.
