Nu-Way

I have an unhealthy relationship with meat in tubes. I love, love, love hot dogs, sausages and anything that can slide onto a bun and be slathered in condiments. While on a trip through Middle Georgia I peeled off of I-75 and made a beeline towards Nu-Way which claims to serve the best weiner in town.

Armed with GPS directions I meandered though midday traffic.  Nu-Way opened in 1916 and is located down a one way street at 430 Cotton Avenue.  After twice circling past the packed parking spots I found a space on my third attempt.  With thought of delicious hot dogs in my head, I trotted down the sidewalk towards the entrance. The original neon sign, complete with a giant red weiner, stood above the doorway. As I walked through the front door I wondered what the sign looked like illuminated at night.

Nu-Way is home to the shortest stools I have ever had the pleasure of resting my bottom upon.  I felt midget like as I sat at the low slung counter and looked over the menu.  I ordered a chili dog, slaw dog, and a side of fries with a full fat Coca-Cola.  As I soaked in the atmosphere I watched the cook work his magic.

In moments a foam plate was placed in front of me.  Nu-Way serves up bright red hot dogs slathered in toppings.  The chili dog was covered with a meaty mild chili, onions, and yellow mustard.  It was delicious and better than the chili dogs served 90 miles to the north by another Georgia hot dog institution.

The slaw dog was doused with a heap of coleslaw and the crunch of the creamy slaw went well with the saltiness of the dog.  The fries were hot, fresh, and salty. I’d go a long way for a Nu-Way and before departing for Florida bought a dark blue t-shirt emblazoned with their yellow and red logo.

Nu-Way has six location in Macon, but if you have time the original weiner stand is a must visit for all hot dog aficionados. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.  Nu-Way can be found online at nu-wayweiners.com and on Facebook. The downtown location can also be contacted by telephone at (478) 473-1368.

  1. I’ve been to that Nu-Way several times and never seen it so empty! You got lucky. There’s usually a wait for a seat.
