My destination was Green County, Georgia, and whenever I venture into the Peach State I search my friend Grant’s blog for a nearby BBQ joint. This time my travels took me near Holcomb’s Bar-B-Que, and after reading his review I looked forward to visiting this establishment.

Holcomb’s Bar-B-Q is housed in an old gas station that faces W. Broad Street.  I arrived before noon and was one of the first customers of the day.  Passing a row of paper boxes I entered what at one time was the garage area. A smiling set of women greeted me warmly from behind the counter and told me to order whenever I was ready.

Holcomb's Bar-B-Que - Greensboro, GA - Photo by Mike BonfantiAn old time menu board, the kind where each letter is pressed between rows of felted ribs, listed Holcomb’s offerings.  As the good Lord intended, none of that pulled pork nonsense occupied the menu.  Instead, Holcomb’s serves their pig either chopped or sliced. I ordered a chopped pork plate with a side of slaw.  As a second side I opted for the food I’m slowly learning to love, Brunswick stew.

I retrieved my order and my heart sunk.  On the white plastic plate the chopped pork had been pre-sauced.  The girl behind the counter told me they do this to keep it moist.  Glumly I took a seat and poked the pork with my fork.  The meat had no smoked flavor and my serving had exactly zero pieces of bark. I grabbed the bottle of thin BBQ sauce and get the meat a squirt.  It was tangy and spicy and upped the tastiness of the meat.

The Brunswick stew was thin and consisted of corn, meat, and spices.  It was unexpectedly creamy, and of the items I ate at Holcolmb’s, was my favorite.  The slaw was standard mayonnaise based dressing on shredded cabbage.  The sweet tea was exceptionally sweet and dark as a moonless night in central Georgia.

I left Holcomb’s slightly disappointed. The food was okay, but the pre-sauced pork placed the restaurant firmly into the growing list of Georgia BBQ spots to skip.  For those wishing to conduct their own research, Holcomb’s is open Thursday through Saturday and can be contacted at (706) 453-2577.
