I was lazy this morning and took a pass on packing myself a lunch. I was not sure what I wanted and decided to look for a place I had not tried in the northeast part of Tallahassee. I settled on Surf City Pizza and made the short drive up Velda Dairy Road to the Publix shopping plaza.
From afar it was hard to pick out Surf City Pizza from the other businesses that call the Publix Shopping Plaza home. As I walked up I saw the a large logo painted in one window with a neon “Open” sign above the door. The inside was standard pizza place decor. A few tables near the windows, a large standing cooler containing a variety of sodas and a counter. Behind the counter stood a large oven. Instead of being one where the pies would slide in and out, it looked like something out of Dominos. The pizza went in one side, and after a few minutes came out the other golden brown.
I looked over the menu and decided to order a pepperoni and mushroom calzone. The total game to $8.49 after tax. I ordered it to go and in around 10 minutes my calzone was in the box and I was on my way back to the office.
I grabbed a coke and opened the box. The calzone filled the box and had several large slits cut into the top. It was a little greasy, but it tasted very good. The ricotta and mozzarella were melted together and blended well with the saltiness of the pepperoni and earthy flavors of the mushrooms. It was a good balance between bread, cheese and toppings. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the sauce that accompanied the calzone came out of a refrigerator and as a result was cold. Despite this it was a good calzone and I would go back to Surf City Pizza to try their other menu items.
