Located between Macon and Gray, Georgia on U.S. 129, Old Clinton BBQ claims to be the best in Georgia. We stopped there on our way up to Athens for lunch. The outside is classic bbq, run down and ramshackle with some picnic tables in front under a small overhang. The welcome mat is saw dust on the floor and the inside consist of brown tables and a concrete floor. It looks like it has not been updated since the mid-70’s. I loved it.
Upon entering the dining room was filled with an assortment of bikers and fellow college football fans who were all appeared to be enjoying their food. I was hungry but was instructed by a fellow traveler to avoid the Brunswick stew who said it was not very good. Since I do not really like Bruswick stew it was no loss to me. I then went up to the counter an ordered the pork plate with fries, slaw, a slice of 14 layer cake and a coke. The service was fast and friendly and in no time I had my 1970’s style cafeteria tray full of food.
I found a spot at one of the tables not occupied by a biker and sat down. Regarding the sides, the coleslaw was a bit flavorless and the fries were nothing spectacular. But BBQ is not about the sides! Oh no, it is about the meat, and the meat here at the Old Clinton BBQ was impressive to say the least. The pork had a nice smoky flavor and was chopped rather than pulled. The portion was large and it was nice and tender. The sauce on the table was vinegar based and spicy. I think it was Eastern Carolina in style since I did not detect any tomato in it. The combination of the two piled high on a piece of white bread was phenomenal. I could have eaten two whole plates of it. It was some of the finest bbq I have ever had.
I almost forgot about the 14 layer cake. The slice I had was thin, about 1/4 of an inch think and about 6 inches square. The cake was served on a small plastic plate covered in plastic wrap. What it lacked in presentation it made up for in taste. It was moist, very delicious and whoever took the time to bake it has talent. I wanted to bring three or four slices home with me but did not have anyplace to store them.
Overall, the chopped pork at the Old Clinton BBQ ranks among the best I have ever had. While I do not know if it is the best in Georgia (I need to do more research) it certainly ranks up there with my favorite bbq joints of all time.
