There are a couple of things I really miss about living in England. Oddly flavored crisps, hand-pulled pints, and proper fish and chips are towards the top of the list. On a rainy and unseasonably cold North Florida day I had a hankering for fried fish. With a distinct lack of pubs in the Northeast area of Tallahassee I racked my brain for a restaurant that could curb my craving. I remembered that Bonefish Grill recently began serving lunch and headed out into the British-like drizzle.
Bonefish Grill’s Tallahassee location sits in the Killearn Shopping Center at 3491 Thomasville Road, a few doors up from Hobby Lobby. Several empty outdoor couches and chairs lined the area in front of the dark plate glass windows and revolving door. I pulled on a heavy bronze fish and entered the dimly lit restaurant. A smiling and perky hostess greeted me and told me to sit wherever I pleased. Aside from a pair of women sitting at a small booth, the restaurant was largely empty.
I sat at the bar and was greeted by the bartender who handed me a menu. While sipping on a coke I looked over Bonefish’s new lunch menu. It is a mix of favorites along with new sandwiches, burgers, and entrees. Bang Bang shrimp was listed two ways, as the standard appetizer and also served in a po boy. New lunch drinks, including a couple of tasting looking specialty mocktails (Fresh Blackberry Smash), were also offered. The one thing that jumped out was the majority of fare was priced within the lunch budget of many people.
My eyes drifted towards the bottom of the menu where I found “Fish + Chips.” Bonefish serves them tempura style with house made tartar sauce and Parmesan fries. The bartender put in my order and I sat in the silent bar area watching ESPN with the sound muted.
Following a brief wait my lunch arrived in a brown paper line basked. Three large pieces of battered Tilapia sat atop a pile of seasoned hand-cut French fries. The batter on the fish was light and inside the fish was flaky, moist, and flavorful. The fries had a nice dusting of seasoning and had a good Parmesan flavor without overpowering the fry. The housemade tartar sauce was delicious, and went well with both the fish and the fries.
Bonefish is open on Sunday from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. , Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 11:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. The corporate parent is on Facebook and Twitter @BoneFishGrill.
