Dick’s Wings & Grill

We were hungry following a morning at Connor’s A-Maize-Ing Acres where we looked at their new aquaculture tank, walked about the farm, and watched the kids chase chickens.  We were in the mood for wings, left the farm and ventured to Dick’s Wings & Grill for some lunch and a few cold drinks.

Dick’s is located at 450077 State Road 200 just east of downtown Callahan in a medium sized shopping plaza.  It was lightly drizzling and I walked towards the restaurant with Mason in one hand and Miss Julia in the other. When they caught a glimpse of Uncle David and Aunt Sam they busted free of my grasp and ran to them.  To say the kids were excited to eat lunch with their family would be an understatement.

Once inside we sat ourselves at a table towards the front of the restaurant.  The ceiling was covered in black and white tiles and NASCAR memorabilia dotted one side of Dick’s while other sports and schedules lines the others.  Several booth stretched down the right side towards a bar area that was emptry on this particular Saturday afternoon.

Our waitress came over, introduced herself, handed us menus, and took our drink orders.  Dick’s is a Jacksonville based chain with seventeen locations in and around the city and one eatery in Georgia.  Unsurprisingly, wings dominate the menu and Dick’s boast 365 flavor combinations. Salads, wraps, soups, burgers, and various appetizers are also offered.  I ordered ten wings with five tossed in lime pepper sauce and five tossed in their hot Buffalo sauce. Becky opted for the boneless wings in Georgia Girl sauce while the kids went for their standby, chicken fingers.  David ordered wings in raspberry sauce. His wife Sam, an inconsistent vegan, ordered fried squash tossed in medium Buffalo sauce.  We also ordered an appetizer of waffle fries topped with blue cheese crumbles and bacon.

The waffle fries and cold beer arrived first.  The fries were piping hot and served with a side of blue cheese dressing.  The Budweiser was served icy cold in a frosted mug. The cold beer really hit the spot and the fries had a short lifespan as six pairs of hands made short work of the basket.

Our meals arrived a short time later along with another round of beers.  The wings were meaty, crisp on the outside, and covered in a nice amount of sauce.  They were served with a side of ranch dressing and celery sticks. The five basted in hot sauce packed a punch without being too overpowering.  The lime pepper were my favorite, and the combination of citrus with the heat from the black pepper and the underlying hot sauce just worked. David let me try one of his raspberry wings and the sweetness from the jelly was an interesting combination with the chicken.  Becky and the kids gave their meals a thumbs up while Sam (allegedly) loved her Buffalo style squash.

Service throughout our meal was very good despite one waitress being responsible for all of the tables after her co-worker called in sick at the last minute.  The restaurant and bathrooms were also clean during our visit.
