The afternoon was hot and hazy as Sam and I left the diner in Murray Hill. The burger hit the spot, but with the sun blazing down and a two-hour drive ahead, I wanted something cool. She pointed to a building across the intersection and suggested we visit Dreamette for an ice cream.
Dreamette is a Jacksonville institution that has opereated in the same Westside location since 1948. The parking lot was full of cars and a small line of people drifted back from the small white building. A blue and white striped awning provided some protection from the midday heat. We found a spot on the side and made our way to the back of the line.
The ice cream stand dishes up favorites such as cones, milk shakes, and sundaes. When it was our turn at the window a perky cashier popped her head up and asked what we wanted. She suggested a banana split in a cup and noted it was their most popular item. I ordered a small and looked at Sam. Between leaving the diner and arriving at the ice cream stand her appetite had waned and she decided to pass. I looked at her in disbelief and admired her will power to avoid dessert.
I waited a few moments and the banana split was passed to me through the window. The plastic cup was layered with vanilla soft serve ice cream, hot fudge, strawberry sauce, more vanilla ice cream, slices of bananas, and topped with candied walnuts and a maraschino cherry. The combination was pure banana split magic and the best part were the candied walnuts. They were glazed, sweet and crunchy. Within minutes all that remained were an empty cup and a used plastic spoon.
Dreamette is a great little spot for an ice cream and had an old time feel which I really enjoyed. I cannot wait to go back and see it becoming one of my must visit spots while in Duval County. On quick note, for those dependent on credit and debits cards, Dreamette is a cash only establishment, so plan accordingly.
Dreamette is open Monday – Thursday from 12:00 p.m to 8:15 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Dreamette can be found on Facebook, and the Murray Hill location can be contacted by telephone at (904) 388-2558.
