To celebrate our 9th Wedding Anniversary Becky and I headed to Savannah, Georgia for a weekend of sightseeing and relaxation. We arrived on Friday afternoon and after settling in at the beautiful Foley House Inn, headed off to The Olde Pink House for a late lunch.
The Olde Pink House is located at 23 Abercorn Street on Reynolds Square. The square was lined with trees and late afternoon humidity lingered in the air. The appropriately colored Pink House occupies an 18th century Savannah Mansion and offers patrons two dining areas, the main dining rooms or the Arches Bar.
The Arches Bar is located on the left hand side of the Pink House and entering through the heavy double door revealed a relaxed, yet refined interior. Double bladed fans hung above the long wooden bar lined with leather chairs. Tapestries, historical prints, and animal trophies decorated the salmon pink walls. Larger tables stood in front of the arches, and during dinner the French doors are opened to provide outdoor dining.
Becky and I took a seat at the bar. She ordered a glass of wine and I began my search for the perfect Old Fashioned in Savannah. The Arches Bar during the afternoon serves a smaller afternoon menu and we decided to relax, drink, and samples several appetizers.
We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were served on a circular plate on a bed of sweet corn cream and topped with apple wood bacon. Bright purple slaw speckled with chopped green onions and bacon on the white corn cream made for a beautiful dish that tasted even better. The green tomatoes were lightly breaded, crisps on the outside, and warm on the inside.
Next we ordered the shrimp spring rolls. Crab, sausage, shrimp, were rolled in a wonton, deep fried, and drizzled with a light honey mustard sauce. The two rolls were served on two pieces of lettuce. This Southern take on a spring roll was crisp on the outside and packed with meat on the inside.
We concluded our afternoon snack with a cheese plate. Three cheeses, including one from Sweet Grass Dairy, were accompanied by fresh fruit, crostini, and Savannah Bee Company honeycomb. The three cheeses were delicious, and my only complaint was for the $12.95 price tag the portion size of the cheeses could have been a bit larger .
Our visit to the Arches Bar at the Old Pink House was outstanding. The service was attentive, the bar staff was friendly, and the food was very good. I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the bar and could have happily spent the night chatting and sipping on cocktails.
