Callahan Barbeque

It’s odd when a BBQ joint is known  for its fried chicken.  That means either its BBQ is bad, or its fried chicken is ridiculously good.  In the case of Callahan Barbeque it is the latter.   Their fried chicken sandwich is something special, and before heading back to Monticello we made the short drive from Hilliard to Callahan to pick one up. My plan to pull through the drive through was quickly scrapped when I saw the line of cars stretched around the back of the restaurant.

I parked the car and dashed into the store through a light rain.  The inside was brightly lit. Wooden picnic style tables were spread about the interior. The walls were a light tan.  A long counter ran the length of the back.  Behind it two smiling girls took orders and ran food to patrons.  I placed an order for two large chicken sandwiches and two large drinks.  While waiting for my meal, I took a seat and watched a flat screen television.

The chicken sandwiches appeared a few minutes later in a simple brown paper sack.  Dodging rain drops as I ran to the car I could not wait to unwrap the chicken sandwich.  Becky ordered hers without mayo, and after determining which of the two was hers, I dug into mine.  A whole chicken breast had been perfectly fried, sandwiched between a soft hamburger bun, and topped with lettuce, tomato, and light mayonnaise.  The chicken was moist on the inside and crisp on the outside.  It was a very good chicken sandwich, and I look forward to trying their BBQ the next time I am in town.

Callahan Barbeque is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 until 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.  They take cash and also accept all major credit cards.  Callahan Barbeque can be found online at callahanbarbecue.com.
