Since it opened, the Midtown Filling Station has been on my list of places to visit. While taking care of some business on this side of town Becky and I popped in for a late lunch. The restaurant is located in the building on the corner of East 5th Ave and Thomasville Road, in in the space formerly occupied by the Winery and Tapas. We arrived just before they locked the doors.
We were seated at a table in the corner of the restaurant. The walls and ceiling of the restaurant were black. Pendant lights hung on long wires. A series of light colored wood panels were suspended over the right side of the space. Black tables were surrounded by brightly colored chairs. Multicolored gas pumps were mounted into the far wall. I especially liked the one featuring the Sinclair Oil logo of a green dinosaur. To the left was an open kitchen.
The waiter came over and took our drink order. In addition to ordering a beer we opted for some boiled peanuts. The peanuts arrived piled in a small metal bowl. Instead of just being seasoned with salt the Filing Station’s peanuts had a extra kick. We sat debating what they added to the peanuts as we snacked. I suspected teriyaki, and this was later confirmed by our waiter.
As the boiled peanuts disappeared I looked over the menu. It was a single double sided sheet and I appreciated not being overwhelmed by choices. The Filling Station offers pub food with a twist including flatbreads, salads, sandwiches and burgers. Several items looked good, but I settled on the chipotle-honey pulled pork sliders. I added a side of tater-tots, and eagerly waited for my lunch to arrive.
The pork sliders arrived on a square white plate. Three ciabatta rolls full of strands of slow cooked pork were slathered in a smokey-sweet sauce. The meat was topped a heap of apple-jicama slaw. In front of the sliders were four pickled vegetables including two kinds of peppers, okra and a gherkin. A flourish of bbq sauce anchored the front of the plate and made it visually interesting. I picked up a slider and took a bite. Pork and bbq sauce leaked out the back and onto my finger. The roll was crunchy, the pork was tender and the sauce was tangy without being too sweet. It was a nice combination of flavors, and I was very happy I selected the sliders. As for the basket of tots, I was in heaven. They were crispy, salty and soft in the middle. An order is enough for two people, but I was amazed when Becky turned down my offer to share. She then told me she did not like tots. I was stunned. We’ve been married for eight years, and I had no idea she disliked an American classic. Not wanting to be wasteful, I happily finished her half.
The service throughout our lunch was attentive and our order arrived promptly. I am sure being the only people helped this out a bit, and would like to see how the restaurant runs during a rush. Regardless, lunch at the Midtown Filling Station was very good, and I look forward to stopping in again sometime.
