Newk’s Needs Werk

For the past couple of weeks my office has been raving about Newk’s Express Cafe.  Whenever I told anyone I was running out to grab some lunch I was immediately asked if I was going to Newk’s.  This afternoon I decided to see what they were fussing about and made the short drive down Thomasville Road.

Newk’s is located in the same plaza as Fresh Market and Steinmart and fills the space formerly occupied by Morelia’s.  The exterior look pretty much the same except for Newk’s marquee that is attached to the right end.  The colors made me think of the German flag and the logo looked like it had been executed by a 3rd grader with some crayons.

While some restaurants recycle what their predecessor left behind, Newk’s completely renovated the interior.  The ceiling was painted black and the floor was covered in large beige/brown tiles.  To the left were the cash registers and the open kitchen.  To the right was a seating area.  Between the two was an table full of condiments and packages of breadsticks.

I decided to order a toasted grilled steak sandwich.  The menu indicated it consisted of sirloin steak, marinated and grilled, sliced thin, layered with caramelized onions, provolone cheese and horseradish spread.  For my side I selected the cole slaw. While waiting for my sandwich to be prepared I grabbed a couple of packages of breadsticks and some pickles.

True to its concepts as an express casual restaurant my order was ready in no time.  The service was fast and friendly and I was ready to devour my sandwich.  It was smaller than I expected and after picking it up I took a bite.  The steak was flavorless. It appeared to have been reheated in a microwave and was rather tough.  The onions and horseradish spread were MIA and the most prevelant flavor was the provolone cheese.  On a positive note the bread had a nice crunchy to it.

Disappointed with the sandwich I sampled the coles slaw.  The vegetables were crisp but the slaw had no character.  It needed salt and pepper to start with and I am unsure if the dressing consisted of anything but a little mayonaise.  Needless to say, I was unimpressed by Newk’s and will not be back.

  1. Meesh and I have eaten there before. It was delish. The pizza was tasty. I did go before with a coworker and was not impressed with their version of a club sandwich or the coleslaw.

  2. My boss raves about this place. I know she had some other sandwich once and loved it. She also stops by on her way into work and gets a salad for the day. Maybe if you go back, you can try something different.
