We made an unexpected trip to Jacksonville, Florida this morning to spend time with Becky’s uncle at Baptist Hospital. When her other uncle came to relieve us we headed out to get something to eat.
After doing a little digging we decided to check out Kickbacks Gastropub in the Riverside/Avondale area. We drove past the pub and found parking on a side street. Upon entering we made our way to the bar and sat at a high top. The pub was dimly lit and had a cool vibe. The walls were covered in beer advertisements and the bartender was protected by a picket fence of taps.
Our server came over and asked what we wanted to drink. I wanted a beer but had no idea what to select. He directed me towards a huge chalkboard listing 84 kinds of beer they had on tap. I ordered a Dogfish Head Namaste and the French mushroom spread. For my meal I got their Monte Cristo sandwich.
While we waited for the food I savored the beer. It was cloudy with nice citrus and spice flavor. The French mushroom spread arrived as I was halfway through the beer and was amazing. It was served with hunks of crusty bread and was creamy with a great mushroom flavor. We cleaned the plate.
I ordered a second beer while waiting for my sandwich, Southern Tier’s Java Stout. It arrived in a small 4 oz snifter. It had a nice coffee aroma. My first thought when I tasted it was this is a very sweet beer. It finished with a hint of coffee.
My sandwich arrived cut in four pieces. Inside its delicious fried golden crust was a 3 layer sandwich of turkey, ham and Swiss cheese. It was served with a side of strawberry preserves and dusted with powdered sugar. It was crispy sweet, savory and delicious. I ate the entire thing. Accompanying it on the plate was a serving of sweet potato fries. They were crisp, sweet and cooked perfectly.
Kickbacks is laid back, casual and serves an amazing selection of beers and if I lived in Jacksonville I would become a regular.
